Abstract The main purpose of premedication is to reduce fear and anxiety and to enable the patient to face his operation with calmness and confidence other aims have been advocated including those of potentiating anaesthesia diminishing the side effects of anaesthetic agents reducing unwanted reflex activity producing amnesia and ensuring a smooth recovery . The present study was designed to recognize the degree of anxiety of patients during the preoperative period to correlate the degree of anxiety to objective parameters as patient`s sex age and type of surgery as well as to evaluate diazepam and promethazine at two dosage levels as anxiolytic premedicant drugs . |
