Abstract

Masonry construction is perhaps the oldest building
system ever employed by man.
Research in building and
materials has caused a renewed
interest in load
bearing masonry construction.
Today,
load bearing
masonry structures
offer a competitive and
an
economical
building system among the skeleton type
structures.
The most common type of masonry walls used in
construction is the concrete block masonry walls. The
reason for their wide spread application is the
variety of the block shapes that can be adopted to fit
various structural and architectural requirements. In
addition, the concrete hollow block masonry units have
also proved to be suitable in thermal inSUlation which
makes them rather acceptable in areas of hot climate.
Moreover, the constituent materials of the concrete
blocks are available allover the world and the roduction of
concrete blocks does not endanger the
fertility of the agricultural soil as the case with
using clay in producing bricks.
