Abstract

The glass ionomer cements are a type of fluoride—releasing material with its anticariogenic effect and excellent adhesion to dentine and enamel. They have been used extensively in recent years for a variety of clinical applications.
The aim of the present work was to study the relationship between the number of S. mutans in saliva and dental plaque and the presence of caries before and after filling carious teeth with glass ionomer cement “Ketac—Silver”.
This study was carried out on forty children (twenty females and twenty males) aged between 12 to 15 years old with carious mandibular first molar. The fol lowing procedures were carried out:
(1) Saliva and plaque baseline samples were taken before f i 11 i ng.
(2) Bacteriological tests were done.
(3) Carious teeth were restored with ‘1(etac—Silver”.
(4) Bacteriological tests were done again at intervals of three and six months after filling.
(5) The saliva and plaque samples were plated on the selective media (Mitis salivarius Bacitracin).
(6) Th number of colonies were visually counted as C . F. U/mi.
