Abstract This work was undertaken with the aim of studying the histological and immunohistological characteristics of the cultured human corneal epithelial cells. Most of the previous studies that were done to evaluate different corneal events employed animals and animal-derived tissues as an alternative model to human. Morphological, biochemical and species differences had placed such studies in a challenge. The availability of human corneal epithelial cell lines that retain their phenotypic trait and were species- as well as tissue-specific might make it possible to model the human ocular surface in vitro. |
