Abstract

The pediatric intensive care unit has evolved as a unique setting for the care of children with unstable or life-threatening illnesses. Pediatric emergencies are of various types: respiratory cardiac, endocrine,
traumatic, infectious, and neurological emergencies.
Patients admitted to a PICU because they require high level of monitoring of vital signs and other body functions not available in other parts of the hospital. These patients may need mechanical ventilation;
invasive intravascular monitoring and frequent attention by both the nursing and the medical staffs.
This study was done in order to Clarify the different causes of admission in pediatric intensive care unit of Menoufiya University hospital, know outcome of the admitted cases and clarify risk factors of mortality and / or prolonged morbidity.
This work was carried out on 800 cases admitted in pediatric intensive care unit of Menoutyia university hospital during period of three years from September 2003 to September 2006. They are consisted of 445 males and 355 females . Their ages ranged from one month up to sixthteen years with mean age of 3.4 ± 1.5 .
All patients suffered from medical emergencies with exclusion who suffered from surgical and traumatic emergencies.
This study provides individual data of patients admitted during a period of study. All data of patients were prospectively collected for each patient from the resident’s record.
