Abstract

Method selection and evaluation are important steps in estimating high quality laboratory service. Before a new or improved method is introduced into laboratory, it must be selected with care and its performance has to be evaluated under proper laboratory conditions.
Many methods have been used for estimation of serum sodium and potassium, most of them are based on flame photometric and ISE methods. However, there are some analytical and financial problems associated with these methods. Recently, a newly enzymatic method was introduced for determination of serum Na and K by the use of sequential enzymatic reactions including B-galactosidase for sodium and pyruvate kinase for potassium.
The aim of this work was to evaluate newly enzymatic method for estimation of sodium and potassium. The performance of this method was compared with ISE and flame emission photometric method.
The material of this study included forty patient’s samples of different concentrations as well as decision levels I and II
