CAM remedies share common principals. These principals include: using natural remedies rather than artilicial drugs. getting to the root ol problems rather than treating symptoms and working on an individual basis not on population ones.CAM practices need to be evaluated in terms of its efficacy and safety as certain risks are reported to he associated with using CAM.
There are prevalent variations between different countries in terms of situation, regulations, legislations education & training and prevalence of CAM use. This study therefore sought to assess the prevalence of different types of CAM among a sample of Egyptians and to understand factors associated with its use.
The prevalence of using CAM was (58.2%). The most common (28.73%) cause was chronic pain, followed by overweight (22.76%). then respiratory problems (1 9.03%). GIT problems represented (11 .94%), and (7.46%) br other reasons. The most common (37.7%) reason for people using CAM was its cost, followed by effectiveness (18.1%). disappointment from Western medicine (8.0°’).
The most effective CAM practice from the opinion of participants was Hijarna (33.6%). followed by acupuncture (25.8%). herbal remedies constituted (24.2%), then spiritual healig (16.4%).
There was highly significant relationship between previous use of CAM services and marital status, educational level and occupation of participants and different parameters that determine the attitude of participants toards the use of CAM services. The most signilicant potentially predictive parameter of using CAM services was source of information about CAM.
The majority (46.3%) of CAM practitioners gave a wrong definition to CAM. (30.0%) gave a right deflnition. while 23.8° ) stated that the\ dotit kno\\ Also it has been showed that the most common (36.3%) type of CAM practiced.
