Abstract
The aim of this work v,rss to study the concentration of penicillin in eerum of children vfith rheumatic heart disease following intramuscular administration of 1,200,000 units of benzathine penicillin. This w#s in an attempt to determine the appropriate spacing of bensathine penicillin injections for prophylaxis of rheumatic fever.
The study was conducted on twenty-five school-age children with quiescent rheumatic heart disease attending the Cardiology Clinic or the Alexandria University Children’s Hospital, They were 13 males and 12 females. Their age ranged between 5 and 13 years,
The patients were selected so as to have not received penicillin in the last month or other antibiotics in the last week prior to entry to the study.
Every patient was subjected to a thorough history taking and complete physical examination and was given one intra¬muscular injection of Tt2GG,000 units of benzathine penicillin. The patients are divided into three groups according to the brand of benzathine penicillin administered-
