Abstract

Ascites is accumulation of free fluid within the peritoneal cavity. It is a common clinical finding with variable causes. It can be caused by peritoneal diseases as : Infection, neoplasms, peritoneal cysts, pseudo-myxoma per It one 1 and gynaecological diseases e.g. endometrios is.
Diseases that cause ascites without involving the peritoneum are those leading to portal hypertension and hypoproteinaemla. Portal hypertension can be caused by liver cirrhosis, portal vein occlusion and hepatic congestion due to* congestive heart failure, constrictlve pericarditis.
inferior vena cava obstruction and hepatic vein obstruction-
-iypoproteinaemla can be caused by nephrotic syndrome,
nalnutritlon and protein-losing enteropathy. Other generalised diseases that cause ascites are : myxoedema,
pancreatic ascites, bile ascifces and ovarian ascites.
This study was carried out to evaluate the value of Laparoscopy In diagnosing the causes of ascites.
This study comprised 30 cases. They were classified into two groups ; group [ A ] with transudative ascites roup [ B ] with exudative ascites . Group [ A ] comprised
