Abstract

Anchors are a common type of foundations used to transmit forces
from super structures to the soil. According to the direction of the tensile
force, anchors may be horizontal, inclined or vertical. Anchors can be
classified into three categories:
1) Gravity Anchors,
2) Plate Anchors, and
3) Piles.
The present study is restricted to shallow horizontal anchor plates
subjected to vertical pullout forces.
In this research, laboratory test program was prepared to perform
the experimental parametric study. Different parameters, such as
embedment depth, anchor shape, tapering angle, kaolinite content, and
water content, were studied to investigate their effects on the ultimate
uplift resistance of such anchors. A theoretical study is also performed to
check the validity of different available theoretical methods for predicting
the ultimate uplift resistance of shallow anchor plates, and to check which
of them is the closest to the experimental results. Finally, a modification is
made for one of the theoretical methods to be valid to predict the ultimate
resistance precisely.
