Abstract

The American Diabetes Association, 2007 has defined DM as a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. The chronic hyperglycemia is associated with long tenri damage, dysfunction and failure of various organs especially the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and blood vessels.DM is very common in the cilThotic population because of shared etiologies such as obesity, chronic HCV, iron overload, and alcohol as well as insulin resistance associated with cirrhosis. Hepatic encephalopathy presents with a wide spectrum of clinical findings that range from the presence of only abnormal psychometric testing or minimal HE to coma The Aim of the work is to study the effect of diabetes mellitus on hepatic encephalopathy in patients with HCV cirrhosis. To achieve such target, we selected 103 patients with liver cirrhosis ± DM. Patients were classified into two groups:Group 1: included 52 Diabetic patients with HCV Cirrhosis Group 2: included 51 No,, Diabetic patients with HCV cirrhosis both groups were classified according to grades of hepatic encephalopathy into 6 subgroups; ; No HE (A), Subclinical HE (B), Grade I, Grade II, Grade III, Grade IV. All the patients in group 1 and 2 are HCV +ve by ELISA.
