Abstract Thirteen years since its initial isolation and culture by Mareshall and Warren, Helicobacter pylori (//. pylori) is now firmly established as the principle cause of chronic gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcer (Goddard and Llogan, 1996). H. pylori is also suspected to be involved in the pathogenesis of both mucosa associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma (Satolte et aL, 1992) and gastric carcinoma (Lutton et al., 1995). The aim of our study is to detect the prevalence of H. pylori infection in patients with upper GTT troubles in Menoufiya, to evaluate factors affecting this prevalence as well as the importance of H. pylori infection, to estimate H. pylori susceptibility to antimicrobials and to evaluate diagnostic value of culture and ELISA in H. pylori infection. The present study was performed on 96 adults above 30 years old. Fifty patients with gastritis, gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcers. 21 of their close contacts as well as 25 patients with dyspepsia but with no gastric lesions as revealed by endoscopic examinations. So, they were taken as a control < group. Antral biopsies were taken from patients and ten of control group to be cultured on the selected Dent’s medium and blood agar as non-selective medium. |
