Abstract

The sun has been worshiped as a life-giver to our planet since ancient times. The
industrial ages gave us the understanding of sun light as an energy source. The
discovery has never been more important than now as we realise that the exploitation
offossil energy source may be affecting the planet’s ambient.
The energy supply from the sun is truly enormous: on average Earth’s surface
receives about L2XIOl7 W of solar power. This means that in less than one hour
enough is supplied to the Earth to satisfy the entire energy demand of the human
population over the whole year. Indeed, it is the energy of sun light assimilated by
biological organism over millions of years that has made possible the industrial
growth as we know it today. Most of the other renewable means of power generation
also depend on the Sun as a primary source: hydroelectric, wind and wave power all
have the same origin.[3]
Today, the direct conversion of the light into electricity, or photovoltaics CPV), is
becoming accepted as an important form of power generation. PV power generation is
reliable, involves no moving parts, and the operation and maintenance cost are very
low. The operation of a PV system is silent, and creates no atmospheric pollution. PV
systems are modular, and can be quickly installed. Power can be generated where it
required without the need of transmission lines.
