Abstract To study the effect and outcome of large-volume . paracentesis in cirrhotic patients with tense ascites refractory to diuretic therapy, 20 patients were included, 12 males and 8 females with age range from 44 to 68 years (mean is 55.9 years). Patients were assigned at random into two groups:-. Group (I): 10 patients subjected to multiple sessions repeated daily) paracentesis of 2 to 4 liter/session-.Group (II): 10 patients subjected to one session (single) paracentesis of 5 to 8 liter/day. Patients were evaluated clinically and laboratory- Clinical evaluation included thorough history and complete physical examination and laboratory assessment included; urine and stool analysis, liver function tests (serum bilirubin, transaminase, total protein, albumin and prothrombin time), hepatitis markers (HBs Ag and anti-HCV antibody), renal function tests (blood urea and creatinine), serum electrolytes(Na & K), blood cell counts and hematocrite percentage, plain chest X-ray, ECG and abdominal ultrasound- |
