Abstract

We presented 85 patients with SSNHL and idiopathic tinnitus who underwent treatment with ozone therapy to be compared with controlled placebo groups. We depended upon multiple mechanisms of ozone action that proposed to overcome the pathogenesis of SSNHL and idiopathic tinnitus. It was reported. that ozone possesses an antiviral activity, vasodilatory effect, promotion of increasing the oxygenation of ischemic tissues as well as immune modulatory effect. We used the most popiar method of ozone administration which was the major autohemotherapy with a total of ten sessions for both idiopathic SSNHL group and idiopathic tinnitus group.
We have shown that our treatment protocol by ozone therapy succeeded in treating patients with SSNHL with a significant success rate of about 77% in comparison to placebo (40%). On the other hand, ozone therapy has failed to treat patients with idiopathic tinnitus.
Age, gender, duration between onset of hearing loss and beginning of the treatment, association of other symptoms (as tinnitus) to the hearing loss, initial degree of hearing loss and the shape of the audiogram did not play a statistically significant role in the rate of hearing recovery in SSNHL.
We reported a considerable success rate for SSNHL better than other therapeutic modalities. Ozone offers better prognosis than other modalities for patients with high frequency loss, patients.
