Abstract

In the present study, the magnitude of the problem of nosocomial parasitic infections in Menoufiya Governorate has been assessed and identification of the parasites involved with correlation to various host factors as age, sex and immunity of the patients was done.
The work also aimed to detect the source of those nosocomial infections and to make permanent slides of helminthic eggs and protozoa found.
Six hundred and fifty patients admitted to Menoufiya University Hospital, Liver Institute, Menouflya University Oncology Hospital as an example for secondary health care services and Ashmoun Central Hospital as an example for tertiary health care services were investigated.
Stool samples from 500 patients were examined by direct smear, formol ether concentration, modified Ziehi-Neelsen staining method, rapid safranin method and trichrome stain. Perianal swab was taken and examined from 100 admitted children. Urine samples from 500 patients were examined by sedimentation method and centrifugation method. Sputum samples from 50 patients were collected, examined and stained with giemsa stain. Thin and thick blood films from 50 patients were stained by giemsa and Leishman stains. Diagnosis of scabies among 500 patients was attempted by the clinical picture and skin scraping. Hairs of 100 children were examined for Pediculus. Serum samples from 40 patients were taken where anti Toxoplasma IgG and 1gM were measured by ELISA technique and PCR was done for detection of Toxoplasma
DNA.
Stool samples from 80 of health care personnel were taken and examined by the previous stool examination methods.
