Abstract
The role of sutures and needled in surgery is very important as the challenge to the surgeon is to approximate the tissues without distortion and then place sutures whitch maintain the position during healing.
Ophthalmic needles are of the finest caliber as compared to other surgical needles and is manufactured from specific types of stainless steel . surgical needles vary considerabley in shape, size, point design, needle length and wire diameter dependent on the surgical procedure to be performed, so these basic points should be .considered on choosing surgical needles.
The surgeon’s selection of needles varies with the type of tissues to be sutured . so different types of needles are manufactured for example cutting edge needles are used for tough tissue(skin,cornea,and sclera) and taper needles are used to structure soft delicate tissue(conjunctiva). As needles are chosen by ophthalmic surgeon to suit his operating technique and also as the surgeon’s interest is to improve suture efficiency , a development of new surgical needles takes place. For this reason, some ophthalmic surgeons create a new designs and a number of used needles are referred to by the name of the inventing surgeon.
