Abstract

In fact the problem of nystagmus is unfortunately handicapping for the patient himself and disappointing for the managing ophthalmologist.
Nystagmus was defined by Duke-Elder (1973) as a disturbance of ocular posture characterised by rhythmic oscillations of the eye, and by Kanski (1989) as an involuntary to and fro oscillations of the eyes.
A curious and unexplained preponderance of males has been rated consistently in the literature (Anderson, 1953).
Nystagmus is a disease of early infancy, but it occasionally ensues at birth. On the other hand, if the infant has bilateral ocular condition that will result in poor vision, the nystagmus often does not appear for 6-8 months after birth (Quo, et al., 1990).
Von Noorden (1980) classified nystagmus according to the clinical type into, manifest, latent and manifest latent nystagmus whereas Kanski (1989) classified nystagmus
