Structure of the colon I

The large intestine extends from the end of
the ileum to the anus. It is about 1,5 meters long. Ita calibre ia greatest at the caecum ^nd ^rudually diminishes as far as the rectum, where there is a dilatation of considerabL aiae juat above th^ anal canal.
The large intestine commences in the ri^ht iliac region in a dilated part, which ia the caecum. It ia about £ X 7.5 cm The terminal ileum opens into the medial posterior aspect of the large intestine at the ooint of junction of th^ caecum with the colon , This opening is provided with a vaj_ve that allows the chyme to pagg in one direction only(from the lluum to the lar^c intestine antf prevents ita r^j^ur^itntion back to the ileum. Also, the appenii^X ariseg Trom the pQBteromedial wall of the caecum. It hag ilifr’nrent positiona . It may be
retrocolic, pelvic, subcaecal or behind the terminal part of
the ileum-

The colon ascends, from the oaocum, through the right lumbar and hypochondrial regions to thu inferior surface of the liver.
