Abstract
five elderly subjects and 20 depressed young adults •with no present or past history of any severe somatic
disorder were subjected to standard psychiatric and I physical examination, social investigation 33 well aa
the Arabic Version of Beck’s Depression Inventory (L.I1.1.)
and the Multidimensional Observation Scale for Elderly
Subjects (M.O.S.E.S.).
I!he aim of this work is to study and identify the presence of depression and demential behaviour as well as to assess the presence and degree of’ their combined presenta¬tion among the aged.
The following results were found :
1- Depression wgs identified in 53^, 42$, and 1J>% of the
geriatric sample using psychiatric interviewing, E.L.I,
and L.O.S.E.S. respectively.
2- Beck’s depression Inventory correctly classified 74.39/» ,
its sensitivity tc depression in the elderlies V79S
71.43>-, and its specificity was 77.78;i, while k.O.S.S.S.
correctly classified 80^, its sensitivity to depression was ICOjo gnd its specificity was 57.14^.
3- Depressed elderlies reported more somatic complaints
than cognitive or affective symptoms ; and depression
was not associated witt £uilt or suicide.
