Abstract This study had been performed to determine the incidence of diabetic retinopathy in Menoufiya Governorate. 565 diabetic patients from different areas in the governorate were examined in the out-patients clinic of Menouf ophthalmic hospital after performing a two hours post-prandial blood sugar level in the diabetic clinic of Menouf general hospital.126 patients were found affected by diabetic retinopathy, from which 15 cases were unilaterally affected.The incidence of diabetic retinopathy in Menoufiya Governorate was 22.3%.The eyes examined were found in different stages of diabetic retinopathy: 134 eyes at the stage of background (56.5%), 44 maculopathy (18.6%), 36 preproliferative (15.2%), 18 proliferative (7.6%), and 5 eyes suffer from advanced diabetic retinopathy (2.1%). Diabetic retinopathy found more prevalent as the duration of diabetes becomes longer (rose from 3.2% after 5 years of diabetes to 65.8% after 15 years to 89.6% after 20 years of diabetes). In non- insulin dependent diabetics (52%) than in insulin dependents (48%). In hypermetropic eyes(47.3%) than myopic eyes (25.7%). It also more prevelent in eyes with low ocular tension, from 13-19 mmHg (83.9%) than eyes with relatively higher tension, from 19-25 mmHg (16.1%). |
