Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia is a common problem among women during child bearing period. Moderate and severe anemia expose pregnant w omen t o an i ncreased risk of p reterm d elivery, low b irth weight, baby hemorrhagic delivery and increases the needs of perioperative and peripartum blood transfusion.
Total dose infusion iron therapy is a modality for treatment of iron deficiency anemia which is less time consuming and decreasing the number of hospital visits.
This study aims at evaluating this method regarding efficacy and safety in comparison to o ral iron administration i n 2 g roups of patients with gynaecologic and obstetric causes of iron deficiency anemia.
The two groups were matched regarding ages, parity, gravidity, duration of pregnancy and the cause of iron deficiency whether normal pregnancy or pathological bleeding from the genital tract. Each group included 50 patients, their ages > 18 years, Hb 7-1 1 g/dl and gestational age> 16 weeks.
Total dose infusion group patients received a calculated single dose of iron dextran according to the following formula: dose of iron dextran (mg) = patient weight (Kg) X (Target hemoglobin (120 gIL) — actual hemoglobin (gIL) ) X 0.24 + 500 mg.
The P0 group of patients received 150 mg elemental iron twice/daily for 6 weeks. 10 mg folic acid/day for 6 weeks was administrated for all patients in the two groups.
