Abstract

Epilepsy is an important public health problem. This study was initiated to evaluate the prevalence-of epilepsy among school students in Alexandria and to study the effect of epilepsy on the intelligence and scholastic achievement of the affected children. All the epileptic cases recorded at the school health centres in Alexandria constituted our’sample. A questionnaire was designed for the epileptic group and their control. The data collected included: - Social background of the sample examined. - Post history, antenatal, natal and post natal carG. . History of the condition. - Scholastic achievement. - Intelligence level. Analysis of the collected data revealed that the prevalence of recorded cases of epilepsy among school students in Alexandria was b.33/l000. The genotype was correlated with the prevalence of epilepsy and 30.1 had parents who were either first cousins or far relatives. The social data revealed that the socio economic level of the families of handicapped children is significantly lower than among control group. The effect of the social environment on the occurence of epilepsy was studied and it wa$found that broken families and illiteracy rate among parents is ~ignificantly ~igher than among the control group. The study of antenatal. hist.a.ry revealed that the majority of mothers of the epileptic children (74.9) received no antenatal care at all. The relation between the natal car~ and the prevalenge of epilepsy has been 5tudied~ Abnormal deliveries were found to be significantly higher among the epileptics than among controls and about one third of cases were delivered by dayas.
