Abstract The aim of this thesis is to study the junction between an empty rectangular waveguide and a shielded microstrip in order to build the scattering model representing this discontinuity. Such scattering model can be used in many microwave structures, specially those employing semiconductor devices. In particular,it may be used in the theoretical investigation of oscillators,in which the active element (Gunn or IMPATT device) is embeded in a rectangular waveguide operating below cut-off, ~ where the generated power is being extracted by a shielded mic- rostrip interfacing the embe~ing waveguide. The electromagnetic fields in both sides of the junction have been expanded ove! the normal modes of propagation on each side, then the fields at the discontinuity interface are matched to obtain a set of coupled integral equations. A technique, based on the matrix representation of linear operators has been used to solve’this set of equations. The results, in the form of reflection and transmission coefficients, have been used to build the required scattering model. The theoretical values of Sll over the whole X-band and those experimentally obtained were coincident within the accu~ racy of the network analyzer display. |
