Abstract
For centuries, use has been made of some sort of intrauterlne devices in order to prevent pregnancy. Extensive research and clinical trials on ITJDs have been accomplished to evaluate their possible mechanisms of action, side effects and complications.
This study included 80 women attending family planning clinic in Shatby Maternity Hospital. 40 women were wearing copper lUDs for periods ranging from 6 to 4.8 months. Five women out of forty had missed extra-’ uterine copper devices. The other 4.0 women were wearing Lippes loop for the same periods of time (6 to 48 months). Also 5 of them had missed extrauterine Lippes loop. A blood sample was taken from each woman to study copper and zinc levels in their sera. Serum copper and zinc levels were determined using Perkin _ Elmer atomic
absorption speetrophotometer.
The results showed that, there was no significant difference in serum copper (or zinc) levels in long term users of copper lUDs and Lippes loop. However, serum copper levels in women with missed extrauterine copper devi-ces were .significantly higher than those of the similar group of
