Abstract Zoonotic protozoa vary from the clearly zoonotic (Toxoplasma) through the, occasionally perhaps frequently, zoonotic (Cryptosporidium) to the arguably zoonotic (Giardia). They present fascinating problems for the biologist, physician and veterinarian and there is still much to be understood about their epidemiology ’ A true understanding of the risk to man from animal infections will require a consideration, not only of genotypic similarities, but also of basic biological and sociological factors that affect exposure to infection. The present work, aimed to determine the gastrointestinal zoonotic protozoal infections among animals, their attendants and those family members suffering from diarrhoea and attending Nfit Ghamr veterinary unit, and to evaluate the techniques and stains used for laboratory diagnosis of intestinal zoonotic protozoan infection. This study was done on 200 farm animals (59 cattle, 71 buffaloes, 43 sheep and 27 goats), 189 . attendants and 19 of their family members who Suffered from diarrhoea. Stool samples were collected and each sample was divided into three parts, the first was examined directly, the second was concentrated by Sheather’s sugar floatation method, and the third part was concentrated by acid ether sedimentation method. Four slides from each part were stained by MZN, safranin methylene blue, Giemsa and aniline carbol methyl violet stains. The stained fecal smears were examined for detection of the zoonotic intestinal protozoa. |
