Abstract

Down syndrome is the best recognized and most frequent human omosomal abnorinality that affects people of all ages, races and economic levels. The incidence of Down syndrome is about 1 per 700-800 live births lorldwide and the observed incidence of Down syndrome is 2.5 per 1000 in ,ypt. Despite a vast amount of epidemiological, cytogenetic and molecular earch, the cause of trisomy 21 remains unclear The birth of a child with Down syndrome is an unexpected event for lost parents, and the diagnosis of child can trigger a range of emotional ponses in parents. Traditionally, mothers in general have for various [3sons stayed at home and have taken greater responsibility for the overall child care especially when a child had special needs. They are more sensitive their disabled children and are far more likely to sacrifice their activities The aim of the present study was to determine the main risk ictors, which may play a role in the occurrence of Down syndrome in hildren and to determine the attitudes of mothers towards their reeted children. The aim of this work was accomplished by studying ,matched case control sample of 452 children including 226 with own syndrome and 226 normal children attending Alexandria ~ummary lLtO \ University Children’s Hospital and Medical Research Institute. Data were collected by means of interview questionnaire with mother of Down syndrome children (cases) and mothers of normal children (controls). Mothers of both cases and controls were interviewed by a questionnaire to determine the possible risk factors and the reaction, knowledge and attitude of the mother of cases.
