Abstract

Epilepsy is the most common neurological disease in the general population. It is a group of chronic disorders in which the indispensable feature is recurrence of seizures. Epileptic seizures can be classified into partial seizures, generalized seizures of nonfocal origin and unclassified epileptic seizures. Epilepsy can arise from a variety of underlying conditions and pathophysiologic mechanisms. The impact of epilepsy on individuals extends beyond the occurrence of seizures. It involves as well emotional, Dehavioral, social, cognitive, and academic functions. Quality of life CQOL) focused on patient’s perception and experience of disease and its impact on three distinct dimensions of health; physical, psychological, social and a fourth general health which cuts across the other ,iliree. Education programs that address medication self-management, I~ychosocial self-management and other education interventions can improve le quality of life for persons with epilepsy. .. The study was conducting aiming to study health-related quality of life ,cl to identify its determinants among adolescents with epilepsy attending 10 epilepsy centers in Alexandria, and to construct, implement, and evaluate intervention psycho-educational program for epileptic adolescents. To fulfill this aim, the study was conducted on 300 epileptic adolescents aged from 11-17 years old, chosen from 2 epilepsy centers in Alexandria, the was the Neurologic Unit of EI-Hadara University Hospital and the ond, the Health Insurance Clinics for School Students. A cross-sectional 140 design was used to study QOL and its determinants among adolescents with epilepsy. A non-experimental pre-post test design was used to evaluate the impact of an intervention program on QOL of 50 of epileptic patients. For the execution of this work, 1. A structured interview questionnaire of both parents and patients was used to collect data about: 1. Sociodemographic data: (Age, sex, residence, education, birth order, and number of siblings, socioeconomic status: including education of both parents, occupation of parents, family size, crowding index, and family income, social status of the parents and current living arrangement of the patients). 2. Academic data: (previous academic failure, last year academic achievement, and absenteeism rate). 3. medical and psychiatric family history: (history of epilepsy, chronic physical and mental disorders between the family members). 4. Personal data: (hobbies, and leisure activities). . 5. Epilepsy related data: (age of onset, duration of the disease, type of seizures, severity of seizures, anti-epileptic medication regimen, drug related systemic symptoms, compliance with medication, presenting symptoms of the seizures, and history of hospital admission). 6. Parental rearing style: (current perception of parenting practices by children and adolescents while living at home). 11. The Arabic Version of the QOLIE-AD was developed after testing its reliability, then used to identify the health related quality of life of the epileptic adolescents. 141 Ill. psycho-educational intervention program was constructed with the [following objectives: 1- To enhance understanding of the nature and causes of epilepsy among patients. 2- To provide information on the triggers of seizures and first aid measures to master seizures. 3- To encourage compliance with medication. 4- To help them accept living, studying, and working with epilepsy. After collection of data, statistical analysis was performed using testretest reliability, internal consistency, factor analysis, arithematic mean and standard deviation, Chi square Mantel Haenzel, and multiple regression analysis. The results of the present study can be summarized as follows: The reliability of the Arabic Version of the QOLIE-AD was 0.99, its I internal consistency 0.97, and seven factors were extracted with item loading >0.40. The study sample included 300 epileptic. Males were more than females (57.7. 52.3 respectively).
