Abstract

Nowadays, cut flowers and foliage occupy an important position in the local and foreign markets, because of the importance as a source of national income. There are suitable environmental conditions to produce flower and foliage crops for local markets and for export. Cut foliage (florists’ greens) production has been increasing rapidly in recent years.
Flower and foliage plants are some of the most colorful and attractive horticultural plants. Some are used to decorate the rooms in our homes while others are used to beautify the areas around our homes and public buildings. The preservative solution extended vase life and inhibited flower senescence , water content was significantly increased when cut flowers were held in preservative solution compared with those in deionized water, tissue pH gradually increased in petals of rose and stems during senescence. Tissue pH of flowers of rose held in deionized water was grater than that of those held in preservative solution, increased tissue pH caused rapid blueing and yellowing of petals of rose (Kim and Lee, 2002)
Michelle et al (2004) reported that, treatment of holly with floral preservatives significantly increased the display life of holly branches.
Fresh flowers deteriorate for one or more reasons. Five of the most common reasons for early senescence are:
- Inability of stems to absorb water due to blockage
- Excessive water loss from the cut flower
- A short supply of carbohydrate to support respiration
- Diseases
- Ethylene.
