Abstract

A multi-wavelength laser source using, an erbium doped fiber as a gain medium is proposed and demonstrated theoretically. The source is terminated by a chirped fiber Bragg grating on one side and cascaded fiber Bragg gratings on the other side. Different apodization profiles for the cascaded fiber Bragg gratings are analyzed to improve the lasing wavelengths selectivity. The Blackman profile is found to be the best to reduce the reflection spectrum sidelobes with a maximum reflectivity of 99%. 16-output lasings with different wavelengths could be generated with nearly constant
‎. output power and constant 3-dB linewidth.
‎This proposed configuration is modified to design a tunable multi-wavelength erbium doped fiber laser. The Bragg resonance wavelength is altered by changes in applied strain and ambient temperature. This phenomenon can be used to tune the lasing wavelengths of the erbium doped fiber laser.
‎Finally, a dispersion compensator for the output of the previous proposed 16-wavelength erbium doped fiber laser is designed using the dispersion characteristics of cascaded fiber Bragg gratings through transmission at the transmitter.
