Abstract

Studies on the separation of metals are important area for scientific and
industrial works. The present thesis includes detail studies on the separation of
Y(III) from Sr(II) and Zr(IV) from U(VI) using liquid-liquid extraction and
liquid membrane techniques. This research can be applied to facilitate
determination of 90Sr in environmental and biological samples. Also, it can be
used to separate pure 90Y used for radiotherapy from 90Sr generator and to
obtain zirconium free from uranium to be used in the nuclear field.
The work carried out in this thesis is presented in three main chapters;
namely, introduction, experimental, and results and discussions.
The first chapter ”Introduction” includes an overview on actinides and
fission products with highlights on the chemistry of the investigated elements;
yttrium, strontium, zirconium, and uranium. It also includes a brief outline on
the basic concepts of membrane separation technique and detailed presentation
of the different types of liquid membranes; bulk liquid membrane (BLM),
supported liquid membrane (SLM) and emulsion liquid membrane (ELM). It
gives also an overview of the types of extractants and transport mechanisms of
solutes through liquid membranes and factors affecting the stability and
efficiency of supported and emulsion liquid membranes. A literature survey
related to the present work concerning the separation of Y/Sr and Zr/U systems
and Ionquest 801 (EHEHPA) as extractant was also given. This chapter ended
by the aim of this work.
