Abstract

Tuberculosis peritonitis is a granulomatous inflammation of the parietal and visceral surfaces of the abdominal cavity. This disease is not uncommon especially in low socioeconomic classes as in Africa and Middle East.
The primary focus, from which involvement of the peritoneal cavity occurs, may not be clinically apparent. It usually occurs due to spread of infection from a tuberculosis focus in the adjacent organs or due to reactivation of a latent tuberculosis focus in the peritoneum or due to haematogenous spread from pulmonary lesions.
The disease is varying in its clinical features, however, it usually presents with abdominal pain and/ or abdominal swelling, fever, Less commonly it presents with anorexia, night sweats, weakness and loss of body weight. It is of sudden or insidious onset, more common in young females. As cites is almost always present. The abdomen is usually tender, but the classically described doughy abdomen is rarely found. Other extra peritoneal tuberculosis lesions may be found in more than half the cases. There is a general agreement that the association of liver cirrhosis and tuberculosis peritonitis is not uncommon to the extent that some consider cirrhosis predisposes to tuberculosis peritonitis, but the mechanism is unknown.
