Abstract Obstructive sleep apnea has been recognized as one of the most common respiratory diseases among the general population (Young et al., 1993). Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is accompanied by substantial burst of hypoxia, such that 50% of the night may be spent in hypoxic conditions. Patients with OSAS have an increased predisposition to developing atherosclerotic degeneration at the level of the carotid arteries (Silvestrini et al., 2002). The aim of this work was to study the carotid intima-media thickness in patients with OSAS in comparison to healthy population. The present study was conducted upon 69 subjects who had been referred to the sleep laboratory unit of the Chest Department in Ain Shams University Specialized hospital in the period between September 2005 and September 2007. The sixty nine subjects were classified into two groups: Group A: Consists of 38 patients with OSAS. Group B: consists of 31 healthy subjects matched for age and sex. They were clinically free from any known or suspected diseases. |
