المستخلص

This study was performed to compare the sealing ability of amalgam and MTA as retrograde fillings with that of Thermafil and laterally compacted gutta-percha used as root canal filling of apictomised teeth. It also examined the interface between the different filling materials investigated and the dentinal walls of the root canals under the scanning electron microscope.
One hundred and sixty recently extracted permanent, human, single canaled teeth with fully formed roots were mechanically prepared using the step back technique after tooth length determination.
After canals preparation, 152 of the teeth were then divided into two main groups while eight teeth were kept unobturated at this stage.
First group (76 teeth) :
Root canals of this group were obturated with laterally compacted gutta-percha using AH26 as a sealer.
Second group (76 teeth) :
Root canals of this group were obturated with Thermafil using AH26 as a sealer.
Apicectomy was then done on the roots of the teeth of both groups by removing the apical 2 to 3 mm.
The teeth of each group were then divided into 3 subgroups (24 teeth each). In the first subgroup, a retrograde cavity (box design) was prepared and filled with amalgam.
