Abstract

To evaluate the primary intraocular lens implantation in the setting of cornealwound repair and cataract removal, in comparison to the secondary intraocular lensimplantation done after primary repair of the corneal wound with cataract removal.
Methods:
The study was performed on 50 patients divided equally into 2 groups. In group(A) the primary procedure of corneal wound repair with cataract removal and primary IOLimplantation was done, and in group (B) we performed corneal wound repair and cataractremoval in one setting and then after one month a secondary procedure of IOLimplantation was done. Both groups were compared as regard the postoperativeinflammation, the final refraction and the incidence of post operative complications.
Results:
We found no statistically significant difference between the primary implantationgroup (A) and the secondary implantation group (B) as regard the postoperative ocularinflammatic 3, the final refraction or the postoperative complication. Patients with primaryimplanted anterior chamber IOLs has slightly statistically significant increase in thepostoperative cells and flare grades in the first post operative day and till the first week, and also an increased ocular irritation duration when compared with the patients withsecondary implanted anterior chamber IOLs, but this difference
Conclusion:
We advocate simultaneous corneal wound repair, lens removal, and primaryintraocular lens implantation. It has the advantages of early visual rehabilitation with norisks of another intraocular operation, the in bag implantation can be done easily with it,also it has an economic advantage as there are no additional costs of a second operation.
