Abstract Background: Included the anatomical description of the lung and the physiological aspects . Risk factors and their mechanisms to produce chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are also mentioned . It also included the clinical picture, investigations and different treatment modalities. Objectives : To evaluate the role of lung volume reduction surgery in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease . Methods : Included history taking , clinical examination, laboratory investigations , radiological examination, spirometry, arterial blood gases measurement , electrocardiogram and echocardiography . It also included the steps of operative intervention in the first group (diffuse emphysema) and in the second group (bullous emphysema) and the pathological examination of the excised specimens . Results: The were significant improvement in both groups as regards the clinical condition (transitional dyspnea index), the radiological improvement in the both plain X- ray and computerized tomography of the chest, the pulmonary function tests , arterial blood gases and echocardiographic parameters. Conclusion: Lung volume reduction surgery is a successful operation in alleviating symptoms of patients . |
