Abstract

The present study was conducted to evaluate the different diagnostic tools for int~stinal schistosomiasis before and after treatment aiming to reach to a simple, effective and low-cost test for both epidemiological surveys as well as for individual diagnosis.
The study included 75 individuals; 50 ofthem were parasitologically diagnosed as having S. mansoni infection either by stool analysis or rectal snip examination. All of them complain of dysentery, the remaining 25 individuals were classified as following (10) of them were normal controls [which were apparently healthy and were selected on the basis of negative examination of either 6 consecutive samples of urine and stool collected on 6 consecutive days with negative history of contact with
contaminated water and the remaining (I S) individuals were infected controls (i.e. infected with other parasites rather than schistosoma, (5) Ascaris lumbricoids, (4) Fasciola hepatica, (3) Heterophyes heterophyes, (3) Hymenolopis nana).
All subjects included in this work underwent the follosing:
(l)Full history taking and clinical examination.
(2)Parasitological examination before and one month after treatment with praziquantel 60 mg/kg by:
(a) Stool analysis of six samples on six consecutive days examined by simple stool sedimentation supplemneted by Kato technique for simple stool sedimentation negative individuals.
(b) Rectal snip taking and examination at 6 evenly spaced levels.
(3) Detection of bilharzial antibodies in serum by indirect haemagglutination test.
