Abstract In this study, a dynamic model has been developed to express the behavior of BODs and DO concentrations in aerated lagoon systems with reference to a comprehensive set of data obtained from a year period of operation of aerated lagoons in Suez WWTP. The sensitivity analysis has been applied to the proposed dynamic model to determine the optimal ranges of the model parameters, the best parameter values, and the sensitivity of the model to variation of _ parameters within their optimal ranges. • The possible applications of the proposed model for operational control of aerated lagoon systems were explored. The aeration power was used as a control tool to limit the DO concentration within a pre-specified range with the general objective of minimizing the operation cost whilst maintaining satisfactory performance. The main conclusions of this study are that, the dynamic modeling was able to predict the observed behavior in aerated lagoons satisfactorily, (about 38 and 61% of the observed behavior of BOD and DO were explained by the model) .
