Abstract

Tramadol is a synthetic, centrally acting analgesic agent with 2 distinct synergestic mechanisms of action, acting as both a weak rapid agonist and an inhibitor of monoamine neurotransmitter reuptake. In the treatment of postoperative pain, it appears to be tolerated well with few side effects and with more safety than other available opioids.
Epidural and intrathecal opioids are claimed to provide superior postoperative analgesia, although there are many variables induced and different measures of analgesic outcome, that it is difficult to assess this reliability.
However, its effect on postoperative pain after subarachnoid administration is still unknown.
This study was designed to evaluate and compare the postoperative analgesic efficacy of intrathecal tramadol with bupivacaine versus fentanyl and bupivacaine in elective lower abdominal surgeries.
The study was conducted upon 60 patients, les than 50 years old of ASA I and II classification who are operated upon for lower abdominal surgeries.
