Abstract Tinnitus is the perception of sounds orginating within the head of the sufferer in the absence of external auditory stimulation. It may be the first or the most prominent symptom of various disease processes that threaten the patient’s physical health and well-being. Different hypothetical mechanisms were postulated for generation of tinnitus. One of these suggested that there was a large spontaneous activity. which exceeded the auditory threshold and it was perceived by persons as tinnitus. As the mechanism of tinnitus is not well understood, no effective treatment has been established yet. Many trials were done to solve this problem and to manage patients suffering from intractable tinnitus. Melding and Godey (1979), Melding et al. (1978) and Shea and Harell (1978) reported the beneficial effect of intravenous lidocaine in tinnitus management. Lidocaine is a potent short term anticonvulsant as well as local anaesthetic drug. Oral anticonvulsant drugs have a more prolonged action than lidocaine. So tinnitus might be reduced by the anticonvulsant carbamazepine. |
