Abstract

Helicobacter pylori gastritis represents a major cause of non-autoimmune gastritis. A lot of histopathological features characterize this type of gastritis. This study evaluated the histopathological features of H.pylori associated gastritis in forty-nine patients. In this study forty nine patients (23 male and 26 females) with age ranged from (18-52 years) with dyspeptic symptoms were evaluated for H.pylori associated gastritis. These patients presented to the Gastroenterology Unit of the Internal Midicine Department, Assiut University Hospital. All the patients were clinically and endoscopically examined. Three antral biopsy specimens were taken from each patient and subjected to rapid urease testing and histopathological examination. Thirty-four patients had H.pylori positive gastritis depending on positive rapid unease test and detection of H.pylori in histological sections. (group I). The remaining 15 patients had H. pylori negative gastrits depending on negative rapid urease test and negative detection of H.pylori in histological sections (group II).
Histopathological examination of specimens of both groups was done, with special stress on neutrophilic infiltrate, lymphoid follicle formation and glandular atrophy. Neutrophilic infiltiration was statistically significant finding in the 1st group than in the 2nd group (76.5% versus 26.7%, P<0.0l) indicating a continued mucosal damage in H.pylori positive gastritis.
