Abstract
The deleterious effects of maternal diabets mellitus (DM) on development and outcome of the fetus and newboern have long been recognized, and the opportunity to improve this outcome has been one of the first chsllenges to be met by a coordinated perinatal-neonatal approach to management.
In the first part of this study diabetes mellitus is discussed as regard to definition, epidemiology and classification; DM may be primary (type 1: insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and type2: non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus) or secondary to other pathology (pancreatic pathology, excess endogenous production of hormonal antagonists to insulin, medications, and secondary of liver disease). Also DM may be associated with genetic syndromes.
In the second part of the study gestational diabetes is spotlighted including definition, and how to detect gestational diabetes. Whit’s classification of maternal diabetes is the widely accepted classification of Gestaional diabetes or Diabetic pregnancy and it is fully discussed.
In the third part of the study problems of the diabetic pregnancy are the main concern; maternal complications of diabetic pregnancy are enumerated and defined in short namely; abortion, pre-eclampsia, hydramnios, preterm labour, intrautrine fetal death.
