Abstract

Fatigue failure resulting in re-fracture of repaired midline fracture of maxillary dentures is a recurrent problem facing some complete denture wearers. Thus, the reinforcement of materials used in repair of fractured dentures deserves attention.

The use of glass fibers has recently proved experimental success in the reinforcement of acrylic resin denture bases. It is thus apparent to assess its use with or without pretreatment in the reinforcement of acrylic resin during midline fracture repair.

Twenty four duplicate heat cured acrylic resin upper complete dentures with midline fracture, were similarly constructed. Dentures were divided into equal four groups. Dentures of group I were repaired using self-cured acrylic resin. Dentures of group II were repaired using self-cured acrylic resin after treating the fractured surfaces with methylene chloride. Dentures of group III were repaired using unidirectional pre-impregnated glass fibers reinforced self-cured acrylic resin. Dentures of group IV were repaired using unidirectional pre-impregnated glass fibers reinforced self-cured acrylic resin after treating the fractured surfaces with methylene chloride.
