Abstract

Pregnancy induced hypertension is one of the most frequently occurring disorder during pregnancy. Incidence rates of 6%-30% have been reported. Pre-eclampsia continues to be an important cause of maternal mortality as well as perinatal morbidity and mortality worldwide.
Hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance are common findings in hypertensive individuals. Patients with hypertension and insulin resistance often have elevated serum triglycerides and decreased high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels. It has been suggested that insulin resistance might be the common etiologic factor causing hyperinsulinemia, hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia and low serum HDL cholesterol a cluster of risk factors for coronary artery disease also designated “insulin resistance syndrome”. Although the concept of insulin resistance syndrome was developed in men and non pregnant women, an interesting analogy can be observed in pregnancy induced hypertension.
