Abstract schistosomiasis (Bilharziasis) has been a national public health problem in Egypt. It was estimated that about 70$ of, all adult cases of liver cirrhosis are due to schistosomal hepatic fibrosis. Schistosomal hepatic fibrosis is differentiated pathologically from other types of liver cirrhosis by the diffuse fibrosis of the portal tracts with no evidence of parenchymal affection or regeneration which maintains normal liver function. The lobular pattern is usually preserved . Inspite of these pathological differences between schistosomal hepatic fibrosis and true cirrhosis, the bilharzial liver behaves clinically and haemodynamically like other forms of cirrhosis leading to portal hyper¬tension and ascites. One of the renal complications of schistosomal hepatic fibrosis and other types of cirrhosis is the progressive impairment of sodium handling which causes sodium and water retention . |
