Abstract

The chassis frame plays an important role in maintaining vehicle components (engine, wheels, transmission assembly, body, etc.,..) in their correct relative positions in spite of the varying loads, they are subjected to the frame’s function is that of a beam, augmenting the body strength and stiffness, both in bending and in torsion. Two bus chassis frames (named V1 and V2) were supported each on two supports, and loaded by concrete blocks weighing up to 3 [ton]. The deflection at some chosen points along the side members of the two frames were measured experimentally. A theoretical model was introduced simulating each frame with the help of the ANSYS finite element software. The obtained values of the deflection were compared to those measured experimentally. A good correlation was found between both results, which gave confidence in the proposed model.
A study was done to propos several types of supports to simulate the actual supports of the chassis frame type V1. A suitable type of support was chosen with 2% error less. The deflection of the frame with its actual supports was calculated at different loading condition. The free chassis modes of the chassis frame type V1were calculated, for three loading cases: case of unloaded chassis, case of curb weight and case of chassis loaded with maximum payload (case of gross vehicle weight). The values of the first bending modes were 8.6, 4.2 and 3.4 [Hz], while those of the first torsion mode were 61.6, 26.3 and 19.7 [Hz] for the previously mentioned three loading cases respectively.
