Abstract

Summary and Conclusion
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by sever itching. It occurs most commonly in infancy and childhood period affecting about 10% of the children. Association between genetic factors and atopic dermatitis are well reported but least is known about other factors such as breastfeeding, diet, infections and environment.
This study was restricted to parents who responded to a questionnaire about the history of AD during the period of study from December 2003 to November 2004 in the outpatient clinic of dermatology in Zagazig University Hospitals.
The study included 100 cases of AD diagnosed according to the UK refinement of Hanifin and Rajka criteria (1994). It included 58 patients with infantile AD and 42 patients with childhood AD; 56% of them are males and 44% are females and 20 controls.
For all cases, the following were done:
- General examination.
- Dermatological examination.
- Full history is taken about family history, birth weight, infections in early life, home environment, degree of crowdness exposure to smoking, dampness and animal exposure.
- Intradermal skin test were done after exclusion of infants for fear of shock
