Abstract
Early attempts at quantitative cardiology focused on the output of the heart which was inevitably not a sole function of muscle contractility.
a variety of modes for direct assessment of muscle contractility were subsequently developed to describe this parameter in the isolated ventricle and intact animal stress dimension relationship were investigated and shown to be able to detect directional changes in contractility.
