Abstract

The aim of this work is evaluation of diabetic foot ulcers, (using the University of Texas Classification system) their treatment and prediction of clinical outcome. The University of Texas Classification System of diabetic foot ulcer includes grading and staging of the ulcer. Grading includes: 1- Grade 0: Pre-or post ulcerative site that has healed. 2- Grade 1: Superficial ulcer not involving tendon, capsule or bones. 3- Grade 2: Ulcer penetrating to tendon or capsule. 4- Grade 3 : Ulcer penetrating to bone or joint. Within each grade, there are 4 stages: 1- Stage A: Clean ulcer. 2- Stage B: Non-ischemic infected ulcer. 3- Stage C: Ischemic non-infected ulcer. 4- Stage D: Ischemic infected ulcer.Foot ulcers are a significant complication of diabetes mellitus and often precede lower limb amputation. Peripheral neuropathy, peripheral arterial disease and infection acting alone or in combination are the main items leading to diabetic foot ulcers. Besides the risk factors that place the diabetic foot at risk for ulceration that include increased plantar pressure, foot deformities, decreased joint mobility and behavioural factors. Various classification systems have been devised to evaluate diabetic foot ulcers and help treatment plans and predict their outcome. The most valuable is the University of Texas classification system that includes grading (according to the depth of ulcer) and staging (according to the presence or absence of infection and ischemia). Grading includes:- • 1- Grade 0: Pre-or post ulcerative site that has healed. 2- Grade 1: Superficial ulcer not involving tendon, capsule or bones. 3- Grade 2: Ulcer penetrating to tendon or capsule.4- Grade 3: Ulcer penetrating to bone or joint. Within each grade, there are 4 stages: 1- Stage A: Clean ulcer. 2- Stage B: Non-ischemic infected ulcer.
