Abstract Plasmapheresis is the removal of plasma usually (2 to 5 L) from a patient and its replacement with fresh frozen plasma, stored plasma, albumin 5 % or other solution (e.g. isotonic saline). Plasmapheresis is used to remove pathological protein or cell from plasma; examples include pathogenic auto antibodies, immune complexes, cryglobulins, myeloma light chains, endotoxins and cholesterol containing lipoproteins. Plasmapheresis has been used in a wide variety of condition including the treatment of neurological disease (such as Myasthenia Gravis, Guillain Baree), haemotolgical disorders (Thrombthytopenic purpura”TTP” Hemolytic uraemic syndrome”HUS” Multiple myeloma), inflammatory disorders (rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis), and metabolic diseases (hypercholesterolemia). The new indications guidelines according to the American association of blood bank divided into two groups: 1- Standard and acceptable therapy 2- Generally accepted in supportive role In renal diseases, plasmapheresis has been used in treatment of many diseases such as Anti-GBM disease, TTP, Rapide progressive glomerulonephritis and multiple myloma. |
